Cultivating The Food Supply

When the stakeholders of a specific industry cluster collaborate in ways to enhance the industry, everyone wins. A consortium called the Food Processors Logistics Research Council created a pilot program to study the cost benefits of consolidating shipping for perishable frozen and chilled foods for the agrifoods cluster, according to a news report listed at the Web site of the Edmonton (Alberta) Economic Development Corp., one of the partners involved with the council. The program has grown to include additional food processors.
The pilot program began in June 2005 in Edmonton and went so well — well beyond expectations — that it was extended until this month.
Initially estimated to realize a 5 percent to 10 percent discount in shipping costs from Edmonton to Calgary, and 15 percent to 20 percent from Edmonton to Vancouver, small- and medium-sized food processors reduced the costs of shipping from 20 percent to 50 percent.
Among future goals, the council wants to test the waters for investment in a permanent facility of 22,600 square feet to 44,000 square feet so that even more companies can benefit from the consolidated shipping system. The council is also interested in opening additional routes to Toronto and the Pacific Northwest.
